### How VirtualSMS public inboxes work

Live Germany numbers currently available in the free pool appear
above. Activity shows SMS recorded during the last 24 hours.

VirtualSMS public numbers use shared inboxes that anyone can view. Messages are
shown only after a number joins the free pool and are automatically deleted after
7 days. New messages usually appear within seconds. The activity count beside each
number shows SMS received during the last 24 hours, not the number's lifetime
 history.

For private account verification, use a
 private verification number
 assigned to your order.

A free German number is fine for a marketplace listing or a forum login.

Its inbox is public, so everyone on this page reads the same messages. That makes it the wrong place for account verification, or for anything you want kept private. German mobile numbers start +49 followed by a 15, 16 or 17 prefix, and the leading zero is dropped once you use +49, which is where most failed verifications actually go wrong. When you need a number assigned to your order alone, a private German number on a physical carrier SIM is $0.05.

## Why does +49 need the leading 0 dropped, and where do German mobile numbers start?

German mobile numbers sit in the 015x, 016x and 017x prefix families set out in the Bundesnetzagentur's mobile-services numbering plan, and those blocks may only be used for mobile service, never for landlines. Written domestically a number looks like 0151 xxxxxxx; written internationally it is +49 151 xxxxxxx, with the leading 0 removed entirely. +49 and 0049 mean the same thing, so either works as long as the 0 that follows it disappears too. Keeping that 0, so the number reads +49 0151 xxxxxxx, is the single most common reason a German code silently never arrives.

Number length also shifts by block rather than staying fixed: an 0151 number runs 11 digits nationally, most 016x and 017x numbers run 10, and a handful of exceptions such as 1609 and 176 run 11. Not every 016x number is a personal handset either: the Bundesnetzagentur reserves 0164, 0168 and 0169 specifically for paging, separate from the 0160/0162/0163 mobile block, and the wider 015x/016x/017x ranges also carry machine-to-machine SIMs alongside personal ones.

Domestic to international

0151 XXXXXXX

+49 0 151 XXXXXXX

Drop the leading 0 the moment you add +49. Keeping it is the single most common German entry error.

## Why does a free German number fail so often?

The most common way a German verification fails has nothing to do with which number you were handed: it is typing +49 0151 xxxxxxx instead of +49 151 xxxxxxx. The leading 0 only makes sense inside Germany's domestic dialing system, and a code addressed to a number written with it still attached goes nowhere, with no error message explaining why.

A smaller trap sits inside the 016x block itself: 0164, 0168 and 0169 are set aside for paging, not mobile telephony, so a number in that specific range cannot take an SMS at all even though it looks like an ordinary 016x mobile prefix.

Beyond formatting, a free German number that is genuinely live is still a shared one. Whoever else finds the same public listing can read the same inbox, and by the time a number reaches that list it has usually already been used to register the same kind of account you are trying to create, which is the exact pattern WhatsApp and similar checks are built to catch.

## How does a shared public number work?

- 1

### One number, many readers

A shared number is a single line whose inbox is published on a web page. Nobody owns it for the duration of a verification, so several people can be pointing the same number at different signups at the same time.
- 2

### You trigger the code, the page shows it

You paste the number into the service you are registering with, ask it to send the SMS, then read the message on the page. There is no account and no confirmation step, which is exactly why the inbox has to be public.
- 3

### The number is reused, then rotated

The same line carries verification traffic for whoever finds it, until it is retired. That reuse is what platforms detect: a number already tied to an account cannot be used to open a second one.

The trade is privacy and acceptance against price. A shared number costs nothing and is read by strangers; a private one costs a few cents and is read by you.

## What a free number actually costs you

Three things go wrong with a free shared number, and they are all the same problem: you do not control it. The inbox is public, so a login code sits in front of strangers. The number is shared, so you cannot see what it has already been used for, or who else is using it right now. And you cannot get it back next month, so any account attached to it is unrecoverable the day the number rotates. A private number on a physical carrier SIM fixes all three: it is assigned to your order alone, its inbox is visible only to you, and a rental holds the same number for 1 to 30 days so account recovery still works.

## Where does a free number fall short?

### Your code is readable by strangers

Anyone with the page open sees the same inbox you do, so a login code, a password reset or a 2FA prompt is effectively public for as long as it is on screen. Never point a recovery flow at a shared number.

### You cannot see what it has been used for

A public number is shared and reused by design, and nothing on this page can tell you which services it has already been registered to or who else is using it right now. If a signup has to work the first time, that uncertainty is the problem.

### A private number removes both problems

A rented VirtualSMS number is on a physical carrier SIM and assigned to your order alone, so its inbox is visible to you and nobody else. That is live now across 145+ countries from $0.05 per verification.

## What else do people ask about German numbers?

 Do I remove the 0 after +49?

Yes, always. 0151 2345678 domestically becomes +49 151 2345678 internationally, dropping the leading 0 the moment the country code is added. Keeping it as +49 0151 2345678 is the most common reason a German verification code never arrives.

What happens if you do not remove the 0 after +49?

The number is malformed from the network's point of view, so the SMS is never delivered and no error message tells you why. This is why the leading-zero mistake is so easy to blame on the number itself rather than the formatting.

Why does WhatsApp reject my German number?

WhatsApp refuses a number that is already registered to an account. A public German number is shared, so you cannot see what it has been signed up to before you try, and the outcome depends on that history rather than on anything you do. Retrying, switching device or waiting does not change it. A private number is assigned to your order alone.

Which prefixes are German mobile numbers?

German mobile numbers begin 015, 016 or 017, written domestically as 0151/0160/0170 and so on, followed by the rest of the subscriber number. Any German number outside those three families is a landline or a special-service number, not a mobile, and even inside 016x a few blocks (0164, 0168, 0169) are reserved for paging rather than mobile service.

Do German banks accept virtual numbers?

This site does not maintain a bank-by-bank list, because policies change without notice. In general, banking apps run stricter reused-number checks than a casual signup does, the same underlying reason WhatsApp refuses a heavily shared line.

Does Germany have three mobile networks or four?

Four, now. Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone Germany and O2 Telefónica are the long-standing three; 1&1 has run its own core mobile network since 2023 and is counted as a fourth operator, even though it still leans on Vodafone's network for national roaming outside its own coverage.
