### How VirtualSMS public inboxes work

Live Netherlands numbers currently available in the free pool appear
above. Activity shows SMS recorded during the last 24 hours.

VirtualSMS public numbers use shared inboxes that anyone can view. Messages are
shown only after a number joins the free pool and are automatically deleted after
7 days. New messages usually appear within seconds. The activity count beside each
number shows SMS received during the last 24 hours, not the number's lifetime
 history.

For private account verification, use a
 private verification number
 assigned to your order.

## Which number do you actually need?

- 1

### Free shared number

Try it first for a throwaway signup. It costs nothing and the inbox is public.
- 2

### Private Dutch number

If the free number gets refused, this is the fix: the inbox is yours alone.

### Rental, 1 to 30 days

Need the same number again for a login or a password reset? Rent it for longer.

A free Dutch number is fine for a marketplace listing or a forum login.

Its inbox is public, so everyone on this page reads the same messages. That makes it the wrong place for account verification, or for anything you want kept private. Every Dutch mobile number starts +31 6, written 06 followed by eight digits at home, and the leading zero is dropped once you use +31. When you need a number assigned to your order alone, a private Dutch number on a physical carrier SIM is $0.05.

## Why do all Dutch mobile numbers follow the exact same pattern?

Dutch mobile numbers are uniform in a way the UK and Germany are not: every single one begins 06 domestically and +31 6 internationally, followed by eight digits, 10 digits total in national format. There is no range of mobile prefixes to learn the way there is with Germany's 015x/016x/017x or the UK's single 07 block.

A separate 12-digit 097 block exists for machine-to-machine devices rather than personal handsets, so a Dutch-looking number that does not fit the 06 pattern is not a personal mobile line, and telecom providers are not permitted to issue it as one. Outside that one exception, if a number starts 06 or +31 6, it is a mobile number, full stop.

One pattern, every number

06 XXXXXXXX

+31 6 XXXXXXXX

Every Dutch mobile number follows this exact shape. There is no separate range of prefixes to check first, the way there is in the UK or Germany.

## Why does a free Dutch number often fail to receive a code?

The one formatting mistake to make with a Dutch mobile number is the same one every European number shares: typing +31 06 xxxxxxxx instead of +31 6 xxxxxxxx. The 0 in 06 is a trunk prefix, not part of the subscriber number, and it has to disappear the moment +31 is added.

Numbers in the 097 block are provisioned for machine-to-machine devices, not personal handsets, so nobody can hand you one of those as a working personal inbox no matter how a listing describes it; a genuine Dutch mobile number always starts 06 or +31 6.

Beyond formatting, a free Dutch number that is genuinely live is still shared. The same inbox is visible to whoever else finds the same public listing, and by the time a number surfaces there it has usually already registered accounts on the very services you are trying to join, which is exactly what WhatsApp and similar checks are built to catch.

## Which network runs a Dutch number?

 KPN

 VodafoneZiggo

 Odido

 Simpel

 Lebara

## How does a shared public number work?

- 1

### One number, many readers

A shared number is a single line whose inbox is published on a web page. Nobody owns it for the duration of a verification, so several people can be pointing the same number at different signups at the same time.
- 2

### You trigger the code, the page shows it

You paste the number into the service you are registering with, ask it to send the SMS, then read the message on the page. There is no account and no confirmation step, which is exactly why the inbox has to be public.
- 3

### The number is reused, then rotated

The same line carries verification traffic for whoever finds it, until it is retired. That reuse is what platforms detect: a number already tied to an account cannot be used to open a second one.

The trade is privacy and acceptance against price. A shared number costs nothing and is read by strangers; a private one costs a few cents and is read by you.

## What a free number actually costs you

Three things go wrong with a free shared number, and they are all the same problem: you do not control it. The inbox is public, so a login code sits in front of strangers. The number is shared, so you cannot see what it has already been used for, or who else is using it right now. And you cannot get it back next month, so any account attached to it is unrecoverable the day the number rotates. A private number on a physical carrier SIM fixes all three: it is assigned to your order alone, its inbox is visible only to you, and a rental holds the same number for 1 to 30 days so account recovery still works.

## Where does a free number fall short?

### Your code is readable by strangers

Anyone with the page open sees the same inbox you do, so a login code, a password reset or a 2FA prompt is effectively public for as long as it is on screen. Never point a recovery flow at a shared number.

### You cannot see what it has been used for

A public number is shared and reused by design, and nothing on this page can tell you which services it has already been registered to or who else is using it right now. If a signup has to work the first time, that uncertainty is the problem.

### A private number removes both problems

A rented VirtualSMS number is on a physical carrier SIM and assigned to your order alone, so its inbox is visible to you and nobody else. That is live now across 145+ countries from $0.05 per verification.

## What else do people ask about Dutch numbers?

Do all Dutch mobile numbers start with 06?

Yes, every one, with no exceptions. Written internationally that same number is +31 6 followed by the same eight digits, just with the leading 0 dropped.

Are there different area codes for Dutch mobile numbers?

No. Unlike the UK or Germany, Dutch mobile numbers do not carry a range of prefixes to memorize: every one begins 06 domestically, so there is nothing region-specific to check before using it.

Why does WhatsApp reject my +31 number?

WhatsApp refuses a number that is already registered to an account. A public Dutch number is shared, so you cannot see what it has been signed up to before you try, and the outcome depends on that history rather than on anything you do. Retrying, switching device or waiting does not change it. A private number is assigned to your order alone.

 Do I drop the 0 after +31?

Yes. 06 12345678 domestically becomes +31 6 12345678 internationally, dropping the leading 0 the moment you add the country code.

Do Dutch banking apps accept virtual numbers?

This site does not maintain an app-by-app list, because policies change without notice. In general, banking apps run stricter reused-number checks than a casual signup does, for the same underlying reason WhatsApp refuses a heavily shared line.

 What happened to T-Mobile Netherlands?

It became Odido. T-Mobile Netherlands and Tele2 Netherlands completed their rebrand to Odido on 5 September 2023, after T-Mobile NL's 2022 acquisition took it out of Deutsche Telekom's ownership. Odido is the current, correct name for that network; T-Mobile Netherlands no longer refers to an operating network in the Netherlands.

Which networks operate in the Netherlands?

Three: KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido. A handful of MVNOs, including Simpel and Lebara among others, ride on top of those three networks rather than running their own.
