### How VirtualSMS public inboxes work

Live United Kingdom numbers currently available in the free pool appear
above. Activity shows SMS recorded during the last 24 hours.

VirtualSMS public numbers use shared inboxes that anyone can view. Messages are
shown only after a number joins the free pool and are automatically deleted after
7 days. New messages usually appear within seconds. The activity count beside each
number shows SMS received during the last 24 hours, not the number's lifetime
 history.

For private account verification, use a
 private verification number
 assigned to your order.

## Which number do you actually need?

Try it first for a throwaway signup. It costs nothing and the inbox is public.

If the free number gets refused, this is the fix: the inbox is yours alone.

A free UK number is fine for a marketplace listing or a forum login.

Its inbox is public, so everyone on this page reads the same messages. That makes it the wrong place for account verification, or for anything you want kept private. A UK mobile number is written 07xxx xxxxxx at home and +44 7xxx xxxxxx abroad, and the leading zero is dropped once you use +44. When you need a number assigned to your order alone, a private UK number on a physical carrier SIM is $0.05.

## Why do UK mobile numbers start with 07, and where does the zero go?

Every UK mobile number sits in the 07 range and is written 07xxx xxxxxx nationally, 11 digits including the leading 0. That 0 is a domestic trunk prefix, not part of the number itself, so it is dropped the moment you switch to the international form, +44 7xxx xxxxxx, one digit shorter. Writing +44 07xxx xxxxxx, with both the 0 and the +44 present, is one of the most common reasons a UK verification silently fails.

UK geographic codes such as 020 for London or 0161 for Manchester start with 01 or 02, not 07, and Ofcom administers them entirely separately as landline numbers. A landline was never provisioned to receive an SMS, so it is never a fallback when a mobile number is refused, no matter which provider issued it.

Ofcom reserved range

07700 900 XXX

07700 900000 to 07700 900999 is permanently reserved for TV and documentation. Nothing sent to a number in this range has ever arrived, for anyone.

## Why does a free UK number so often fail to receive a code?

Ofcom, the UK telecoms regulator, permanently reserves the entire block from 07700 900000 to 07700 900999 for television, radio drama and technical documentation. Every number in that block is fictional by design and has never been allocated to a real SIM, which is why nothing sent to one of them has ever arrived, for anyone. A site handing out a number in this range as a working inbox is not handing out a working inbox.

A UK landline, the numbers Ofcom classes as geographic and that start 01 or 02, has the same problem for a different reason: it was never connected to a mobile network in the first place, so no SMS can reach it regardless of how current or available a listing makes it look.

Even a genuine UK mobile number that does work is still a shared one. Anyone who finds the same public listing can read the same inbox, and by the time a number surfaces there it has usually already registered accounts on the exact services you are trying to join, which is the pattern WhatsApp and similar checks exist to catch.

## How does a shared public number work?

- 1

### One number, many readers

A shared number is a single line whose inbox is published on a web page. Nobody owns it for the duration of a verification, so several people can be pointing the same number at different signups at the same time.
- 2

### You trigger the code, the page shows it

You paste the number into the service you are registering with, ask it to send the SMS, then read the message on the page. There is no account and no confirmation step, which is exactly why the inbox has to be public.
- 3

### The number is reused, then rotated

The same line carries verification traffic for whoever finds it, until it is retired. That reuse is what platforms detect: a number already tied to an account cannot be used to open a second one.

The trade is privacy and acceptance against price. A shared number costs nothing and is read by strangers; a private one costs a few cents and is read by you.

## What a free number actually costs you

Three things go wrong with a free shared number, and they are all the same problem: you do not control it. The inbox is public, so a login code sits in front of strangers. The number is shared, so you cannot see what it has already been used for, or who else is using it right now. And you cannot get it back next month, so any account attached to it is unrecoverable the day the number rotates. A private number on a physical carrier SIM fixes all three: it is assigned to your order alone, its inbox is visible only to you, and a rental holds the same number for 1 to 30 days so account recovery still works.

## Where does a free number fall short?

### Your code is readable by strangers

Anyone with the page open sees the same inbox you do, so a login code, a password reset or a 2FA prompt is effectively public for as long as it is on screen. Never point a recovery flow at a shared number.

### You cannot see what it has been used for

A public number is shared and reused by design, and nothing on this page can tell you which services it has already been registered to or who else is using it right now. If a signup has to work the first time, that uncertainty is the problem.

### A private number removes both problems

A rented VirtualSMS number is on a physical carrier SIM and assigned to your order alone, so its inbox is visible to you and nobody else. That is live now across 145+ countries from $0.05 per verification.

## What else do people ask about British numbers?

Why does my UK number get rejected during WhatsApp verification?

WhatsApp refuses a number that is already registered to an account. A public UK number is shared, so you cannot see what it has been signed up to before you try, and the outcome depends on that history rather than on anything you do. Retrying, switching device or waiting does not change it. A private number is assigned to your order alone.

 Do I write a UK number as 07 or +44 7?

07 is the domestic form and +44 7 is the international form of the exact same number. The leading 0 is a trunk prefix that only makes sense inside the UK network; drop it the moment you add +44, so 07123 456789 becomes +44 7123 456789, never +44 07123 456789.

Can a UK landline number receive an SMS?

No. UK geographic numbers, the ones starting with area codes like 020 or 0161, are landlines and are not provisioned to receive SMS at all. Only UK mobile numbers, which start 07 domestically or +44 7 internationally, can receive a text.

 Are 07700 900 numbers real?

The numbers exist in the sense that Ofcom has formally reserved them, but none of them is assigned to a working SIM. The full block from 07700 900000 to 07700 900999 is set aside specifically so scripts, adverts and television dialogue never accidentally use a real subscriber's number, so nothing sent to one is ever delivered.

Which UK banks refuse virtual numbers?

This site does not maintain a list of specific banks, because policies change without notice. What is stable is the mechanism: banking apps and crypto exchanges generally run stricter reused-number checks than a casual forum signup does, for the same underlying reason WhatsApp does, so they are among the platforms most likely to refuse a public UK number.

Can I pick a UK area code?

Not on a shared public number, and the concept does not really apply to mobiles anyway. Area codes like 020 or 0161 belong to UK landlines, which cannot receive SMS at all; UK mobile numbers are not divided into regional codes, so there is nothing region-specific to pick.

Is the UK still on four mobile networks: EE, O2, Vodafone and Three?

Not any longer. Vodafone UK and Three UK completed their merger on 31 May 2025, so the market now runs on three network groups: EE, Virgin Media O2, and the merged VodafoneThree. A guide that still lists four separate UK networks is describing a structure that stopped existing in mid-2025.
