## Agent payments (x402)

Pay-per-call SMS verification over the x402 protocol (HTTP 402). An AI agent settles a single onchain stablecoin payment and gets the OTP back in the same HTTP response. No account, no card, no API key, no session to manage.

- **Status: LIVE.** `POST /api/v1/x402/sms-verify`. Call without payment first to receive the HTTP 402 payment manifest (accepted networks/assets/price), then retry with a valid `X-PAYMENT` header to settle inline and receive `{ phone_number, code, sms_content, x402_settlement }` in the response.
- Accepted rails: Base USDC, Solana USDC, Solana USDT, BNB Chain USDC, BNB Chain USDT (Permit2). Price ceiling per call: $0.05–$5, default $0.10, set via optional `max_price_usdc`.
- Canonical discovery manifest (always current on accepted networks + live/roadmap status): [/.well-known/x402.json](https://agents.virtualsms.io/.well-known/x402.json). Full agent docs: https://agents.virtualsms.io/
- **NOT deployed:** a standalone deposit-first `/api/v1/x402/topup` flow and a separate `/api/v1/x402/facilitator` endpoint are roadmap-only, both currently return HTTP 404. Payment settlement for sms-verify happens inline in that one handler; there is no separate facilitator call to make.

- Illegal account creation, identity fraud, spam
- Services that block all virtual numbers (most retail banking apps, government ID systems)
- Outbound voice calls (most rentals receive only; select plans support inbound voice)
- Card payments (intentionally for privacy; crypto and SBP only)

## Glossary

- OTP (One-Time Password): a short numeric code sent by SMS once, used to prove phone-number ownership during signup or login
- Virtual number: a phone number not tied to a physical SIM card; typically VoIP-based and increasingly blocked by major services
- eSIM: a digital SIM embedded in a device; generally treated as a real SIM by major consumer services (WhatsApp, Google, Telegram), though some financial/KYC services distinguish it further. It is not the same as a dedicated physical SIM on a carrier network
- Physical SIM / real SIM: a carrier-issued SIM card on a real mobile network; the gold standard for SMS verification that services cannot programmatically block
- SMS verification: the process of proving phone ownership by receiving a one-time code via text message
- Number rental: renting a dedicated number for days or weeks (not shared, not one-time), suitable for accounts that need ongoing SMS access
- VoIP (Voice over IP): phone service delivered over the internet rather than a carrier network; typically blocked by WhatsApp, Google, and Telegram for new-account verification
- MNO (Mobile Network Operator): a carrier that owns its own radio spectrum and towers (e.g. Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2); SIMs on MNO networks are the most trusted for verification
- MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator): a carrier that resells MNO capacity under its own brand (e.g. Lebara, giffgaff); MVNO SIMs are real mobile SIMs and generally accepted for verification
- MSISDN: the full international phone number format used to identify a SIM on a mobile network (e.g. +447911123456)
- HLR (Home Location Register): the carrier database that records which SIMs are active and on which network; HLR lookups reveal whether a number is VoIP or a real mobile SIM
- MCC/MNC (Mobile Country Code / Mobile Network Code): two numeric identifiers that specify a SIM's home country and carrier; used by verification services to classify numbers
- x402: an open protocol for machine-to-machine payments over HTTP status 402; lets AI agents pay for API usage with stablecoins without an account or card
- Residential/mobile/datacenter proxy: a proxy whose exit IP is assigned by, respectively, a home ISP, a mobile carrier, or a datacenter; residential and mobile proxies read as ordinary consumer traffic
- MCP (Model Context Protocol): an open protocol that lets AI agents call external tools directly; VirtualSMS ships a hosted MCP server so agents can order numbers and read SMS without custom API integration code
