# Phone Carrier + Line-Type Checker

Free phone number lookup: carrier, line type (mobile, landline or VoIP), country and spam risk. See why WhatsApp or Telegram rejected your number.

Free, unlimited, no signup

Verification keeps failing? This tells you in seconds whether the number itself is the reason.

A breakdown of the VoIP providers consumer platforms reject most often (Telegram, WhatsApp,
Tinder, Uber) plus recommended countries per verification target. Free, emailed as a PDF.

Paste any phone number in international format and this free tool returns its carrier, its line type (mobile, landline or VoIP) and its country.

Enter it E.164 style, for example +447911123456, and the result arrives in seconds and stays cached for 30 days. If your WhatsApp, Telegram, Tinder or Signal verification keeps failing, line type is usually the reason: consumer platforms read it and refuse VoIP. For verification that actually lands you need a real mobile SIM, and Virtual SMS runs physical SIMs across 145+ countries from $0.05 per verification.

## How the check works

### 1. Enter the number in E.164 format

Start with a plus sign and the country code, then the national number and no spaces: +447911123456 for the UK, +14155552671 for the US, +34600123456 for Spain. Without the country code the lookup cannot tell which national numbering plan to read the number against.

### 2. The number is queried against the HLR

The Home Location Register is the live GSM database that says which carrier a number is currently attached to and what kind of line it is. This is the same signal WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Google consult before they decide whether to send you a verification SMS.

### 3. Read the line type, not just the carrier

Carrier name is useful, but line type is the field that decides verification. Mobile passes. Landline cannot receive SMS at all. VoIP is the one that quietly gets blocked, and it is the most common reason a code never arrives.

## Mobile vs landline vs VoIP for SMS verification

 Mobile (real SIM)

 Works

 Receives SMS

 Yes

 Passes verification

 Accepted

 What it means

A physical SIM on a GSM, LTE or 5G network. This is what WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Tinder, Uber and Google expect to see.

 Landline

 Receives SMS

 No

 Passes verification

 Rejected

 What it means

A copper or fibre line tied to an address. It cannot receive SMS, so verification either fails or falls back to a voice call that many services disable.

 VoIP (internet number)

 Receives SMS

 Sometimes

 Passes verification

 Blocked or throttled

 What it means

Numbers from Google Voice, Twilio, Bandwidth, Plivo, TextNow and TextFree. Consumer platforms read the line type and refuse them.

 Toll-free / premium

 Receives SMS

 No

 Passes verification

 Rejected

 What it means

Service numbers, not subscriber numbers. Consumer platforms reject them by default.

| Mobile (real SIM) Works | Landline | VoIP (internet number) | Toll-free / premium |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Receives SMS | Yes | No | Sometimes | No |
| Passes verification | Accepted | Rejected | Blocked or throttled | Rejected |
| What it means | A physical SIM on a GSM, LTE or 5G network. This is what WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Tinder, Uber and Google expect to see. | A copper or fibre line tied to an address. Consumer platforms read the line type and refuse them. | Service numbers, not subscriber numbers. Consumer platforms reject them by default. |

Line type, not country and not formatting, is the field that decides whether a verification SMS is delivered.

## Why this tool flags VoIP as risky

### Consumer platforms block VoIP

WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Tinder, Uber, Google, Discord, Snapchat and Instagram all read HLR line type. VoIP means the verification is blocked or the SMS is throttled.

### Global coverage, live data

Coverage spans the ITU country-code range, including the UK (O2, Vodafone, EE, Three), the US (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, plus Bandwidth, Twilio and Plivo), Spain, Germany, India, Brazil and Indonesia.

### The real-SIM alternative

VirtualSMS numbers are real carrier SIMs, the same mobile line type these platforms expect. Numbers across 145+ countries from $0.05 per verification, and you pay only when the SMS arrives.

## Frequently asked questions

What does this tool actually check?

Three things: whether the number is valid (passes E.164 formatting and network reachability), what carrier owns it (Vodafone, O2, EE, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Twilio, Bandwidth, Google Voice and so on), and its line type: mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free or premium. That combination tells you whether WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Uber, Google or Tinder will accept it for verification.

Why does my VoIP number keep failing Telegram or WhatsApp verification?

WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and most consumer platforms query the same HLR line-type data this tool uses, then either block the verification outright or throttle SMS delivery for VoIP numbers. If this tool reports a line type of VoIP, that is the reason. It is not a country issue and not a formatting issue. You need a physical mobile SIM to reliably pass verification.

 Is this tool really free?

Yes. Unlimited lookups, no signup, no card. If you want an emailed PDF report with more context on how VoIP numbers get rejected service by service, enter your email and we will send one, still free.

Where does the carrier data come from?

A commercial HLR (Home Location Register) lookup service that queries live GSM networks. Coverage is strong globally for mobile carriers and for US and UK VoIP providers, and weaker for small European VoIP resellers. Lookups are cached for 30 days, so repeat checks of the same number do not hit the upstream again.

Can I check US, Canadian, Brazilian, Indian and UK numbers?

Yes, coverage is global. The ITU maintains the country codes; carrier detection is handled per country. It resolves correctly for the UK (O2, Vodafone, EE, Three), the US (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, plus Bandwidth, Twilio and Plivo for VoIP), Germany, France, Spain, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Nigeria and more.

Do you store the phone numbers I enter?

Not in plaintext. Lookup results are cached against a hashed key for 30 days so repeat queries are instant. Aggregate lookup counts (per country, per day) are kept for capacity planning. If you opt in to the PDF report, your email and the source page are stored against the attribution record, full terms at /privacy.

What is the difference between mobile, landline and VoIP?

Mobile means a real physical SIM on a GSM, LTE or 5G network (Vodafone, Verizon and the like). Landline means a copper or fibre line tied to a physical address. VoIP means an internet-based number from Google Voice, Twilio, Bandwidth, Plivo, TextNow, TextFree and similar. For SMS verification only mobile reliably works: landlines cannot receive SMS at all, and VoIP is blocked by most platforms.

Do you offer this as an API?

Not yet. For programmatic carrier lookups today, use an HLR lookup provider directly. A /tools API is on the roadmap, tell us at support@virtualsms.io if you would use it.
