Why it happens

The fix

"This phone number is already associated with a Proton account"
Why it happens
Proton allows one account per phone number globally. A previous user of this specific SIM created a Proton account with it that still exists. Proton does not release that binding when an account is inactive.
The fix
Cancel for a full refund and get a fresh number from a different country. Polish, Dutch, and German numbers have the lowest prior-association rate in our fleet because those SIM batches rotate faster. Don't retry the same number — the binding is permanent on Proton's side.
Code never arrives within 2 minutes
Why it happens
Either Proton's SMS gateway is slow on the route to this specific carrier, or the SIM is temporarily rate-limited. Not an account issue — it's a network path issue.
The fix
Cancel for a full refund. Try a different country from Tier 1 — Poland and Netherlands have the most consistent SMS delivery speed for Proton in our fleet. Don't keep hitting 'Resend code'; each resend resets Proton's internal timer.
Proton offers only an email verification option — no phone prompt appears
Why it happens
Proton Mail does NOT always require phone verification at signup — it depends on the signup path (web vs app), IP reputation, and anti-abuse signals at that moment. Phone verification is triggered when Proton's system flags the signup as higher-risk. If you're not seeing a phone prompt, you don't need a virtual number — use email verification instead.
The fix
No action needed on the VirtualSMS side. If you bought a number before realising phone verification wasn't required, cancel immediately for a full refund — the refund window is 20 minutes from purchase if no SMS was sent.
Code arrives but Proton says it's wrong or expired
Why it happens
Proton's verification codes expire in a short window. If you requested multiple codes, only the most recent is valid — earlier ones are invalidated the moment Proton sends a new one.
The fix

Why it happens

Proton asks for an alternative verification (captcha or email) instead of accepting the phone code
Why it happens
Proton routes some signups through a captcha + email flow when phone verification isn't enough by itself, or when the account shows other risk signals. This isn't a virtual number rejection — Proton accepted the number but added an additional step.
The fix
