Yes. The phone carrier and line-type checker is free with no signup, no card and no trial clock. If you want an emailed PDF report with more context on how VoIP numbers get rejected service by service, you can ask for one, still free. The tools still in development will follow the same pattern.

No. The tools are open to anyone: fraud and risk teams, app developers, support engineers, researchers, and people debugging their own failed verification. You only need an account if you decide to buy or rent a real mobile number after a tool tells you why the current one is failing.

A commercial HLR (Home Location Register) lookup service that queries live GSM networks. The HLR is the registry mobile operators themselves use to route SMS, so carrier ownership and line type are authoritative for mobile numbers. Coverage is strong globally for mobile carriers and for US and UK VoIP providers, and weaker for small European VoIP resellers. Lookups are cached for 30 days, so a repeat check of the same number is instant.

Mobile carrier identification is accurate for both ported and un-ported numbers, because it reads the same registry operators query for routing. VoIP detection is strong for the large US and UK providers (Bandwidth, Twilio, Plivo, Google Voice, TextNow, TextFree) and weaker for small regional VoIP brands with no distinctive number-block signature. A carrier of "Unknown" usually means the number is allocated but not yet active on a network, or sits in a range the lookup has not mapped.

Yes. Google Voice numbers route over the internet rather than over a physical SIM on a carrier network, so they are classified as VoIP. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Uber, Tinder, Binance and most consumer platforms block them during SMS verification.

TextNow numbers are VoIP: free US numbers routed over the internet out of VoIP carrier blocks. They work for calls and messages between TextNow users and for low-value services, but they fail verification on WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Tinder, Google and most crypto exchanges. The same holds for TextFree, Hushed, Burner and other free-US-number apps.

Almost always because the number is VoIP. WhatsApp rejects nearly all VoIP numbers at signup, Telegram flags them on the verification screen, and Signal quietly drops SMS to them. All three read the same line-type signal the checker exposes, and they block VoIP before the SMS is ever sent. If the checker reports VoIP, that is the reason: not your IP address, not your device, not your account age.

HLR (Home Location Register) is the database mobile carriers use to know which network a number belongs to, whether it is active, and where to route its SMS. Every mobile number in the world is registered in one. A lookup queries that registry and returns carrier, country, line type and reachability, which is far more authoritative than matching a number against a published number-pattern list.

Mobile means a real physical SIM on a GSM, LTE or 5G network. Landline means a copper or fibre line tied to an address, which cannot receive SMS at all. VoIP means an internet-based number from a provider such as Google Voice, Twilio, Bandwidth, Plivo, TextNow or TextFree. For SMS verification only mobile reliably works: landlines cannot receive the message, and VoIP is blocked by most consumer platforms.

Not in the web UI. It is one number at a time by design, to keep the tool simple and fast. A bulk or API version is on the roadmap once we see demand. Yes, for internal use. Fraud detection, screening signups for VoIP, KYC supporting evidence, support triage and app QA are all fair game. Please do not scrape the tool at volume: a person checking numbers is fine, thousands of requests an hour will be rate limited. For programmatic volume, use a commercial HLR lookup provider with its own commercial terms, or contact us.

Only partly. A valid result means the number is allocated and matches an HLR entry, not that somebody is actively using it right now. Carriers do not consistently signal "subscriber not reachable" back to lookup services. A definitively dead number often comes back invalid, or with an unknown carrier. For certainty you would have to send a test SMS and see whether it delivers.

Aggregate counts only (how many lookups per country per day, for capacity planning) plus cached results keyed against a hashed form of the number, so repeat queries are instant. We do not sell lookup data, do not share individual queries, and do not store your IP address in plaintext. Yes, coverage is global. It resolves correctly for the UK (O2, Vodafone, EE, Three, giffgaff), the US (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, plus Bandwidth, Twilio, Plivo and Google Voice for VoIP), India (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL), Brazil (Vivo, Claro, TIM), Indonesia (Telkomsel, Indosat, XL), Nigeria (MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile), Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico and Colombia, among others.

There are no fixed dates, deliberately. The compatibility matrix needs enough verification volume behind it to be worth publishing, and the readiness checker builds on it. Use the notify form on this page and you get one message when each one ships, and nothing else.
