Do I need a VirtualSMS account to use the tools?

No. The tools are open to journalists, researchers, fraud/risk teams, app developers, KYC vendors, customer-support engineers, and people debugging their own verification flows. You only need a VirtualSMS account if you want to buy or rent a real mobile number after the tool tells you why your current one is failing.

Where does the carrier and line-type data come from?

NumVerify, a commercial HLR (Home Location Register) lookup provider. HLR queries the live GSM network registry that mobile operators themselves use for routing — so the carrier ownership and line type are authoritative for mobile numbers. Coverage is strong for major US, UK, EU, LATAM, APAC carriers; weaker for small European VoIP resellers. Results are cached 30 days so repeat lookups are instant and don’t burn quota.

How accurate is the carrier lookup?

Mobile carrier identification against live HLR is highly accurate for ported and un-ported numbers — this is the same registry mobile operators themselves query for routing. VoIP detection is strong for major US VoIP providers (Bandwidth, Twilio, Plivo, Google Voice, TextNow, TextFree) and most UK/EU VoIP resellers; weaker for small regional VoIP brands that don’t have distinctive number-block signatures. If the carrier field returns "Unknown", the number is typically allocated but not yet activated on a network, or it’s a number range the HLR provider hasn’t mapped yet.

Does Google Voice count as VoIP?

Yes. Google Voice numbers are classified as VoIP (specifically `non_fixed_voip` in HLR parlance) because they route over the internet through Google’s infrastructure rather than a physical SIM on a carrier network. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Uber, Tinder, Binance and most consumer platforms block Google Voice during SMS verification.

Is TextNow a real US phone number?

TextNow numbers are VoIP. They’re free US numbers routed over the internet, provisioned from VoIP carrier blocks like Bandwidth. They work fine for calls and SMS between TextNow users or for low-value services, but they fail verification on WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Tinder, Google and most crypto exchanges. Same pattern holds for TextFree, Hushed, Burner, and other "free US number" apps.

Why does WhatsApp / Telegram / Signal keep rejecting my number?

Almost always because the number is VoIP. WhatsApp rejects virtually all VoIP numbers at signup. Telegram flags them on the verification screen. Signal silently drops SMS to them. The platforms query the same HLR line-type signal this tool exposes and block VoIP before the SMS goes out. If this tool reports `line_type: voip`, that is the reason — not your IP, not your device fingerprint, not your account age. You need a real mobile SIM to reliably verify on those platforms.

HLR (Home Location Register) is the database mobile carriers use to know which network each phone number belongs to, whether it’s active, and where to route SMS. Every mobile number in the world is registered in some HLR. A HLR lookup queries that registry and returns the carrier, country, line type, and reachability — the same data carriers use when they decide whether to deliver your SMS. HLR is more authoritative than scraping public phone-number-pattern lists.

Why does Tinder reject my Skype number?

Skype assigns VoIP numbers through Microsoft’s VoIP carrier blocks. Tinder, like most consumer apps, queries line-type during signup and rejects VoIP numbers to reduce spam/bot account creation. The same blocking happens with Viber Out, Google Voice, WhatsApp Business-attached VoIP numbers, and most cloud-communications providers (Twilio, Plivo, Telnyx, Bandwidth). For Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, Snapchat, and Instagram, you need a real mobile SIM.

Can I check multiple numbers at once (bulk lookup)?

Not in the web UI — it’s one number at a time by design, to keep the tool simple and within free-tier limits. A bulk / API version is on the roadmap once we see demand. If you need programmatic lookups today, use NumVerify or Twilio Lookup directly — both expose the same HLR data behind REST APIs. Does this tell me if the number is currently active or disconnected?

Partially. The `valid` flag means the number is allocated and matches a HLR entry — not necessarily that someone is actively using it right now. HLR carriers don’t always signal "subscriber not reachable" back to lookup APIs. If a number is definitively dead, the lookup often returns `valid: false` or `carrier: Unknown`. For 100% confidence a number is active, you’d need to send a test SMS and see if it delivers.

What data do you store about my lookups?

Aggregate counts only (how many people checked numbers per country per day, for capacity planning) and cached lookup results keyed by a hashed representation of the number so repeat queries are instant. We do not sell lookup data, do not share individual queries, and do not store your IP in plaintext — it’s one-way FNV-hashed before persistence. If you opt in to the email-gated upgrades, your email and the tool you came from are stored against the attribution table. Full terms at /privacy.

Can I use the tools commercially — for my own KYC / fraud / signup flow?

Yes, for internal use. Fraud detection, account-signup VoIP screening, KYC supporting evidence, customer-support triage, and app QA are all fair game. Do not scrape the tool at high volume (single humans are fine; thousands of requests per hour will get rate-limited). How is this different from NumVerify’s own free tool?

Same underlying HLR data (we’re a NumVerify customer on their Basic plan). Differences: (1) no signup on our side, (2) richer UI — we flag exactly which consumer platforms block VoIP so you know why your verification failed, (3) cached for 30 days, so repeat lookups are instant and don’t count against quota, (4) honest about what VoIP detection misses (small European resellers, brand-new number ranges). We don’t hide limitations behind a sales pitch.
