If you bind your personal SIM to Bybit and a SIM-swap attack succeeds — where a criminal socially engineers your carrier into porting your number — the attacker gets direct access to withdrawal approvals. A virtual number isolates your personal SIM from this exposure entirely.
Bybit permanently ties one account to one phone number. A separate trading account for a different strategy, a fresh account after an issue with a previous one, or a family member's account all require a distinct phone number. A virtual number handles this without a second physical SIM.

These are the actual failure modes on Bybit. Each has a specific cause — don't retry blindly.
Bybit permanently associates a phone number with any account it was ever linked to, including closed or suspended accounts from prior SIM holders. The rejection fires before an OTP is dispatched.
Cancel on VirtualSMS for a full refund. Get a fresh number from a different country — UK, Poland, and Netherlands numbers have the lowest prior-association rate in our Bybit catalog.
The SIM range is temporarily rate-limited by Bybit's SMS gateway, or there's carrier congestion on the delivery route. Don't repeatedly press Resend — each request resets the wait window.

Bybit's post-signup risk system flagged the account — common triggers: VPN or datacenter IP at signup, matching IP to a restricted jurisdiction (especially US), or attempting a deposit within minutes of registration. The phone number type is not the cause.
Remove the VPN if you used one. Complete Bybit's email confirmation and basic profile setup before touching deposits or withdrawals. Bybit's region detection is IP-based — if your IP is in a restricted jurisdiction, the account may be blocked regardless of the phone number.
Bybit sends SMS confirmation as a secondary withdrawal approval layer on some account configurations, independent of your primary 2FA method. If the registered phone number was a single-use activation that has since been released, those withdrawal SMS prompts will fail.
This is exactly why renting rather than activating-once matters for any Bybit account used for trading. Check your Bybit account's security settings to see if SMS withdrawal confirmation is enabled — you may be able to switch it to app-only if you have full account access. If the single-use number is already gone, Bybit's support path for updating the registered number requires verifying the old one first.
Bybit occasionally routes signups to voice-call OTP delivery based on IP or number risk scoring.

No. The phone number step at Bybit signup is entirely separate from its identity verification (KYC). KYC requires a government-issued ID and is mandatory to unlock full trading limits, withdrawals above threshold, and fiat features.
