WeChat says the number is invalid or not supported
Why it happens
WeChat restricts SMS OTP to countries where it has verified carrier agreements. Some country prefixes are blocked at the OTP-send level regardless of number quality. VoIP number ranges are also silently rejected before the SMS is sent.
The fix
Cancel for a full refund. Switch to Malaysia, Singapore, or Hong Kong — these have verified carrier relationships with WeChat's SMS gateway. Don't retry with a different number in the same country if the first one returned 'invalid'; the country-level block will apply to all numbers from that prefix.
OTP never arrives within 2 minutes
Why it happens
Either WeChat's SMS gateway is experiencing congestion on that carrier route, or the specific SIM has a delivery issue. WeChat's OTP routing is less reliable than WhatsApp's — occasional delays are normal.
The fix
Cancel for a full refund. Try a different country from Tier 1 (Malaysia, Singapore). Don't hit 'Resend' more than once — WeChat rate-limits accounts that request multiple OTPs in quick succession and may lock you out for 24 hours.
WeChat requires a 'friend verification' QR scan after the SMS step
Why it happens
Tencent added a social-graph verification step to combat automated account creation. After the SMS OTP, WeChat may display a QR code and ask you to have an existing WeChat user scan it within 24 hours to 'unlock' your account. This is a platform-level anti-bot measure — it's triggered by account patterns, not number type.
The fix
This step cannot be bypassed by changing numbers or using a different tier. You need an existing WeChat user to scan the QR code. Options: ask a friend with WeChat, post in a WeChat community or Telegram group for mutual help, or use a WeChat account management service that has existing contacts. Once scanned, the account is fully activated.
Account is immediately restricted to read-only after registration
Why it happens
New WeChat accounts from IPs or device profiles associated with VPN, datacenter traffic, or unusual registration patterns are placed on automatic cooldown. The account exists but can't send messages for 24–72 hours.
The fix
Don't try to use the account immediately for outbound messaging. Set a profile picture, set a WeChat ID (username), and don't add more than 5 contacts in the first 24 hours. Let the account 'age' for at least 48 hours before using it for business outreach. This is a behavioral pattern check — the number type is not the cause.
WeChat asks to call the number instead of sending SMS
Why it happens
WeChat uses a voice-call OTP fallback in some registration paths — particularly for accounts where the number's SMS history triggers caution. Not common with Tier 1 country numbers.
The fix
VirtualSMS numbers receive voice calls in some markets (check availability for your country before buying a rental). If voice call is offered and your number supports it, accept — the numeric code dictated by voice works the same way. If your number doesn't receive voice calls and SMS is blocked, cancel for a refund and try a different country.
Account banned within days of registration
Why it happens
WeChat's AI moderation is aggressive: mass-messaging, adding too many strangers too fast, joining too many groups in quick succession, or using the account from multiple IPs will trigger an automated ban. This is a usage-pattern violation, not a number-quality issue.
The fix
New WeChat accounts need significant warmup: add 1–2 known contacts first, wait 48 hours before joining groups, set a full profile (avatar, name, region) before engaging with anyone. Don't use the fresh account for outbound sales or any volume-based activity in the first week.
WeChat Pay setup requires additional verification after account is active
Why it happens
WeChat Pay (Wallet) is a separate product within WeChat with its own identity-verification layer. For non-mainland users, WeChat Pay requires linking an international bank card or using a mainland Chinese bank card — the phone number alone doesn't unlock WeChat Pay for overseas accounts.
The fix
WeChat Pay availability for non-mainland accounts is controlled by Tencent's regional agreements — a virtual number doesn't change that.
